Signs of the Times

[From the National Observer, Minneapolis, Minn., June 9, 1923]

The true life is a manifestation of beauty, goodness, and truth—beauty of character, goodness of heart, and truth that deals with realities only and not at all with appearances. These manifestations will not only win the world prizes—power, pleasure, and prosperity; but the spiritual treasures—wisdom, love, and happiness. The first step is taken when life is seen as a joy and not as a mere duty which implies bondage. Life without enmity is love that loves to the uttermost—even loving our enemies into friends. Life free from opposition is the consciousness which neither criticizes nor seeks to correct, which judges not and therefore is not judged, which condemns not and therefore is not condemned. Essential to this is a thorough understanding of the Sermon on the Mount. Self-justification and self-condemnation only serve to nourish the error delusions, and the true life harbors no delusions.
