A copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
A copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was sent me without explanation in April, 1910, by a dear friend, who had begun the study of Christian Science not long before. Up to that time I had never heard of this book, and knew almost nothing about Christian Science or its Discoverer and Founder. Although not in need of any specific physical healing, I had been handicapped since childhood by despondency and a sense of futility, which thwarted my efforts in every direction. I read the textbook without expectation or prejudice; and it seemed to me I did not understand a single sentence it contained. However, I noted later that it was during this reading that the taste for tobacco and intoxicants completely left me; and it has never returned.
I was brought up in a God-fearing home; but when I grew up I held entirely aloof from churches for several years. I now began to attend a Christian Science branch church. I also purchased a Bible, and have continued ever since to study it together with Science and Health. Gradually I began to manifest a more joyous disposition, a better general state of health, and became more satisfied and useful. These benefits, derived wholly from Christian Science, have proved to be permanent.
A few years ago an automobile collided with a taxicab in which I was riding. My back was injured in some way, but with assistance I was able to make my way to my home, a few blocks off. Then I became unable to move my head, legs, or arms, and suffered excruciating spasms of pain. A Christian Science practitioner was asked to give absent treatment, and with this aid I was able, in about ten days, to resume my normal activities. This healing also was permanent.
