Realities and Dreams

ALL through the writings of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, we find her speaking of the failures, fears, sicknesses, and sins of mortal life as "dreams." Dreams, indeed, they were called by many writers before her, who had caught some glimpse of the reality of things, bringing thereby a vague comfort to many despairing hearts. But it was not until the clear teaching of Christian Science was given to the world that men became actually able to prove scientifically the dream-nature of evil by beginning to awaken from the dream.

So long as one believes that dreams are facts, present, spiritual facts, sent or permitted by God, he is unable to shake himself loose from them, and must suffer the consequences of believing a lie. The teaching that God never knows them and never sent them, when understood and demonstrated, brings liberty. As to the change wrought by the teaching of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 529), "This revelation will destroy the dream of existence, reinstate reality, usher in Science and the glorious fact of creation, that both man and woman proceed from God and are His eternal children, belonging to no lesser parent."

A helpful illustration may be taken from the father and mother who, tucking their little child safely in bed for the night, are conscious of the child's health, safety, protection, and surroundings of love and harmony. The child, however, may be dreaming of some slight or seemingly terrible attack of evil; and he will appear to suffer in proportion to the apparent seriousness of the dream. Nothing will end that suffering except his awakening to the consciousness of himself as safe with his father and mother. They knew all the time of his safety; they knew nothing at all of his painful beliefs. Christian Science teaches us that just so is it with all God's children.
