Signs of the Times
[From the Acton Gazette and Express, London, England, Jan. 26, 1923]
Rev. J. H. Hocken, minister of the Acton Hill Wesleyan Church, said that the gospel offered a way of transforming work. It gave a man a spiritual mastery over his toil, so that the slaves in early Christianity under brutal masters did their work heartily, as unto God. It lifted their toil into a divine service, so that work truly done became worship; and it made the sphere of daily work the place where character was formed. Christ made fidelity to duty a discipline for eternity and love to one's fellow-worker the highest possible opportunity.
