In the year 1912, I turned to Christian Science for the healing of a cancerous growth. My healing was slow, for there was much to be overcome in the way of fear, resentment, self-pity, and self-righteousness. I am grateful for the slow healing, for it was the means of teaching me to be more patient with those with whom I come in contact. There were times of discouragement, of wondering "why;" but, on the whole, my upward journey had many moments of peace such as I had never known before in my former way of thinking. It taught me that God is Love and that He was not the author of sickness, sin, and death, and gave me a God I could love, but not fear.
Five years before, I had undergone an operation in a Chicago hospital. When I left the hospital the surgeon gave me a card stating the nature of the disease and of the last operation. He told me that if the growth should return and it was so that I could not come to him, I should take the card to a surgeon and he would know just what had been done and what to do. I took very good care of that card; for to me it meant life. In moving from Chicago to Toronto the card was lost. As soon as I discovered its loss all the former symptoms of the growth returned and the later condition was worse than the first. Then, when humanly speaking there was no help, I turned to God; and as I gave up the desire to have my own way, and could truly say, "Thy will be done," the way that had seemed so dark was made bright; and through the teachings of Christian Science I found God, peace, and health, and I am indeed grateful.
