Christian Science came into my home some fifteen years...
Christian Science came into my home some fifteen years ago through the wonderful healing of a brother. About six years later, it was my privilege to have class instruction under a student of Mrs. Eddy; and for this teaching I am deeply grateful.
I came to this city as a war worker in 1918, and shortly after my arrival my faith in Truth was put to a crucial test. During the epidemic of influenza, which swept the country, I was seized with both this disease and pneumonia. While in this condition I could neither eat nor sleep; and could not lie down at night for more than a few moments at a time without strangling. It seemed that I was in the coils of a serpent which was constantly whispering, "You might as well give up, for you will never be any better."
After five days of intense suffering, I realized that I had reached the limit of human endurance. In this last extremity, however, it seemed that I came nearer to God than ever before, for there was such a sweet sense of peace around me. Kind friends secured a Christian Science practitioner for me. From the moment treatment began I knew that everything was all right. That evening I was able to be out on the street, and after the third treatment (all absent work) returned to the office and performed my usual duties. I feel that this was the most valuable experience I have ever had; for it brought such reliance on God, and a deeper sense of compassion for all humanity. Furthermore, it taught me that there was something in my thinking that must be eliminated. I have been in perfect health ever since that time. Grateful as I am for the saving of my life, I am still more grateful for the healing which has taken place in my consciousness, for I have simply been made over. Words are inadequate to express in any degree the gratitude I feel to the Way-shower, to Mrs. Eddy, and to each and every one who has helped me in this journey from sense to Soul.
