At the age of five years my relationship to an earthly...
At the age of five years my relationship to an earthly father was severed by death. I was blessed with a mother whose precept and examply were a constant inspiration, and it became my one aim to live up to the high ideals kept ever before me. Early in life the word "principle" became well fixed in my consciousness: even before the concept of a formal church membership presented itself, God was All-in-all to me, and in every time of need I called on Him for help. At the age of seventeen years I became a member of a church in this city, being identified with all the activities of the organization, and was considered a faithful and dependable worker.
About the year 1901 Christian Science was presented to me, but the study was not taken up in earnest. In January, 1907, my mother passed on; and in April, 1909, my only brother also. Then followed a series of hard experiences, from the effects of which I was unable to rally. All efforts of well-meaning friends and loved ones were of no avail; their words fell on deaf ears. The concept of God implanted in my consciousness by my mother came to my rescue, and in the hour of Stygian darkness I cried aloud to this God. The answer to that cry was the glorious light of Christian Science, which came into my life and made it anew,—bringing surcease from a crushing sorrow, freedom and joy never before experienced, the instantaneous healing of a diseased condition of the eyes and discarding of glasses worn for years, also the healing of a physical weakness to which I had been in bondage for some time.
Throughout the years since coming to Christian Science I have been very grateful for the love previously manifested by the members of the church with which I was then affiliated, and their earnest efforts to relieve me in my sore distress. I have also been keenly alive to the measure of gratitude due the physicians in their untiring efforts to overcome the physical diseases from which I seemed to suffer, particularly since my father was a physician during the pioneer days of Texas, and it was often related of him that his efforts to dispense to his fellow-men the benefits of his skill in the medical profession had resulted in his untimely passing away.
