A clergyman in eastern Canada, in the course of a sermon...

Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) Journal

A clergyman in eastern Canada, in the course of a sermon which was reported in a recent issue of the Journal, made some misleading statements which need correction. He is reported to have said that "a church which puts healing in the first place, and which centers its activities upon healing, and which people join chiefly to get rid of their bodily ailments, is out of line with the mind and spirit of the Master." It is clear that he is referring to Christian Science, although he does not mention it by name. His statements, however, are wrong.

In Christian Science the healing of the sick is regarded as highly importance but the healing of sin is of greatest importace. The importance which Christian Science places upon healing accords with the importance which Christ Jesus placed upon it. The Master's three years' mission was largely spent in healing. He instructed his disciples to teach others also, so that his purely spiritual mode of healing might be perpetuated as the one and only healing method required by the human family, and the method that is alone adequate to destroy the ills to which flesh seems to be heir.

Christ Jesus healed disease by destroying the error which he discerned in the thoughts of his patients. He spoke of a woman as "a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years." He healed her physical infirmity by loosing her from this mental bondage. To the paralytic he said: "Thy sins be forgiven thee." Christ Jesus did not minimize the importance or value of physical healing. It is an essential part of the whole salvation which the Christ brings to humanity. It is as necessary to-day as it was then.
