When I came to Christian Science I had just returned from a clinic after an operation, as I had suffered for seven years with a difficulty which physicians designated as tubercular, and which had been growing much worse as time went on. I had thirty suppurating wounds in one leg. After the operation the doctor put on a plaster cast, so that I could not move my leg in the least; and, in addition, I suffered terrible pain. Then I was brought home, and several weeks passed by without improvement. The doctor did not know what to do, except to suggest another operation. But the saying, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity," was proved true. During the morning of the day on which I was to be operated upon again, a dear acquaintance, having heard of my sickness, visited me. She told me of Christian Science, and left me some Christian Science literature. While she told me of this wonderful teaching, and as I read the testimonies later on, it gradually dawned on me that there was a greater power than the knowledge of the doctors, which could heal me. When the doctor came we told him that we had decided that I did not want another operation. He then only changed the plaster cast.

After some further experiences with the doctors I turned to Christian Science. Happily and with confidence in God, the practitioner and I worked bravely on in Christian Science; and no doctor called thereafter. After a short time I felt strong enough to take off the plaster cast myself. Then the effects of divine Truth showed themselves anew; for I took the leg out of the cast without experiencing any pain, and the wounds had healed nicely. A month later I could leave my bed, in which I had spent five months. With the support of crutches I walked across the floor.

One evening when I was about to retire, I noticed that I held the canes off the floor when I crossed the room, instead of leaning on them as usual. Every day I realized more and more the only power of the one Spirit; and finally I was free from pain and walked entirely without canes. Shortly after that I could work again.
