The perusal of the new book, "Christian Science War...

The perusal of the new book, "Christian Science War Time Activities," recently issued by The Christian Science Publishing Society, reminds me of how much I had to be grateful for during the recent war, for which I have never adequately expressed my thanks through the pages of the Christian Science periodicals. The great lesson drawn from those years is, that the supply of good is always equal to the demand. However severe the struggle, however protracted the demonstration, the day-star of divine Science (of heavenly harmony) is on the horizon, shining for all those who watch for its coming. The greater the need, the more readily available is the power of Truth and Love. In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany" (p. 290) our Leader writes, "Divine Love is never so near as when all earthly joys seem most afar;" and again and again, daily and hourly, this truth is being demonstrated by Christian Scientists.

Being on the reserve of officers at the outbreak of the war, it was my duty to rejoin the army as speedily as possible; and before many months had passed, I was drafted with my regiment to take part in the fighting at Gallipoli. By many, this front was believed to be the most strenuous; but every difficulty was minimized and overcome for me through an understanding of Christian Science and the help of a practitioner in England, through whose understanding the effects of a wound were so quickly overcome that an army surgeon pronounced it to be the quickest healing at that time in the hospital. After this experience, many months were spent on the western front; and some very helpful demonstrations were experienced. On one occasion, early in the war, a beautiful healing came through the words of one of our Leader's poems (Poems, p. 5), "When heaven's after-smile earth's tear-drops gain." Through a mist of doubt and fear the "aftersmile" of heaven (harmony) was discerned; and what had seemed to be a very trying situation vanished. Divine Science is surely "the song of songs;" and only those who have sought and found the living Christ can realize its beauty, and therefore pray for more of it to permeate the gloaming and enlighten the midnight hour.

The prayer of all, who have seen what is perhaps the last great physical war on earth, is that war may be no more; and that the glow and glory of Truth may so enlighten the individual consciousness that national and personal antagonism may become impossible. Our Leader tells us, on page 281 of Miscellany, that "war will end when nations are ripe for progress;" and for many years she prayed daily that there might be "no more war" (p. 286). It is my desire to follow her example, and to watch and pray daily that warlike thoughts, such as jealousy, hatred, cruelty, fear, revenge, may be purged from consciousness, and that the light of reflected love may speedily usher in the brotherhood of man.—Robert E. Key, York, England.
