Regarding autosuggestion, Christian Science takes a position...

Regarding autosuggestion, Christian Science takes a position positively disapproving of that method as being non-Christian and harmful in its effects. In adhering loyally to the healing method of Jesus, as taught in the New Testament, Christian Scientists have found an effective method. They would consider it sacrilegious to say that Jesus practiced autosuggestion. Christian Science is rendering incalculable service to humanity by pointing out and explaining the difference between Christian healing, as taught and practiced by Jesus, and the use of the human or carnal mind through suggestion, hypnotism, will-power, and similar methods. The Christ-method is purifying and reformatory, and cannot be used for any evil purpose. The same cannot be said of autosuggestion. Again, referring to the term "faith-healing," it should be clearly understood that Christian Science does not heal by that method, as the word is commonly accepted, but by imparting a practical understanding of the nature of God, as divine Mind, ever present and all-powerful, "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth thy diseases." The following quotation from page 150 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, will serve to show that this teaching is scientifically Christian in its attitude toward disease: "The mission of Christian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration, is notprimarily one of physical healing. Now, as then, sings and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these sings are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."
