The inference that Christian Science treatment is accomplished...

New Castle (Ind.) Times

The inference that Christian Science treatment is accomplished by suggestion, or the operation of human will power, is wholly wrong and absolutely contrary to what Christian Science teaches and practices. Any one who has studied Christian Science understands that the practice of healing is based unreservedly upon the power of God as revealed and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. By this teaching it has been proved that it is God, divine Mind, which heals the sick, and countless thousands of intelligent Christian people bear grateful testimony to this fact. Human will is not a healing agency. It is not of God, and has no actual power; for it is of the "carnal mind" and the "carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes this perfectly plain in her statement on pages 19 and 20 of her 1901 Message to The Mother Church: "From ordinary mental practice to Christian Science is a long ascent, but to go from the use of inanimate drugs to any susceptible misuse of the human mind, such as mesmerism, hypnotism, and the like, is to subject mankind unwarned and undefended to the unbridled individual human will. ... The whole world needs to know that the milder forms of animal magnetism and hypnotism are yielding to its aggressive features. ... People may listen complacently to the suggestion of the inaudible falsehood, not knowing what is hurting them or that they are hurt. This mental bane could not bewilder, darken, or misguide consciousness, physically, morally, or spiritually, if the individual knew what was at work and his power over it. This unseen evil is the sin of sins; it is never forgiven. Even the agony and death that it must sooner or later cause the perpetrator, cannot blot out its effects on himself till he suffers up to its extinction and stops practicing it."

The intimation that Christian Science is not based upon and does not accept the authority of the Bible reveals unmistakably that this critic knows little or nothing about Christian Science. The truth of the matter is that Christian Scientists use and depend upon the Bible continuously. They probably are closer students of it than any other one class of people. The daily lessons read by all active Christian Scientists contain a large number of citations taken from all parts of the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation, and these Lesson-Sermons are read in the church services on Sunday and are taught and studied in the Sunday schools. In fact, no Christian Scientist can successfully or satisfactorily read the literature of Christian Science without the use of the Bible. Mrs. Eddy based all her work, her writings, and her teachings upon the Scriptures.
