The sermon reported in a recent issue misrepresents and misinterprets the teachings of Christian Science, and reveals again the fact that a material interpretation of the Bible brings to the reader uncertainty, confusion, and contradiction. Spiritually interpreted, the Bible proves to be wholly consistent, and enables the student to apply its teachings and prove the law of God given therein in the way Christ Jesus did and commanded his followers to do.

In the effort made to explain the difference between "mental healing" and Christian Science this critic seems to admit vast powers to the human mind, while his statements pertaining to spiritual process are vague and complicated, and in no way does he show how he heals by spiritual process. This would indicate a lack of understanding of what spiritual healing is, and an extreme ignorance of Christian Science practice.

Let it be understood definitely and positively that the power of human will does not enter into the practice or teaching of Christian Science. Suggestion, hypnotism, mesmerism, and all other occult processes of the human mind are dangerous and undesirable. Their influence is wholly bad, and places unsuspecting people at the mercy of selfish and evil manipulations and influences. This is confirmed by the statement of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 144 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" where we read: "Human willpower is not Science. Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned. Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism. Human will-power may infringe the rights of man. It produces evil continually, and is not a factor in the realism of being. Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, 'Peace, be still.'"
