My first healing in Christian Science took place about...

My first healing in Christian Science took place about twenty-one years ago. I had a serious trouble with my eyes and was told by an eye specialist that glasses must be worn constantly, and as one eye was quite defective I should have the lenses changed often. I got no relief from the glasses and was finally confined to my bed in a dark room, as the pain was so intense. Christian Science treatment was then recommended and tried. After ten days the healing was complete and it has been permanent. I was also wonderfully healed of an acute attack of rheumatism with which I had been bound hand and foot for about two months, unable to move or feed myself. After the first two treatments I was able to be up and dressed, though the use of my hands was not regained for about two weeks. Many trials seemed necessary to show me that I must work out my own salvation, but I finally began to study Science and Health and found it indeed a "Key to the Scriptures."

I was reared by Christian parents and cannot remember when I did not read the Bible and attend the church of which I became a member when ten years old. Later I also taught in the Sunday school, but I failed to understand the Bible as I thought I should, and to receive the help from the church which I felt should rightfully be found there. After studying Christian Science, I found the help and the truth for which I had longed; and I am more thankful for the understanding of God as Father-Mother and an ever present help in trouble than for the physical healing. With my small understanding of Truth I have had a number of instantaneous healings, and in our family of eight, Christian Science is the only physician. Our children, the eldest of whom is sixteen years old, know nothing of medicine. Among the many ailments overcome are measles, croup, chicken-pox, earache, toothache, burns, boils, blood poisoning, skin disease, broken bones, and many minor ills, such as colds, sore throat, and headache. I do not see how people, especially with children, live without the knowledge of God gained through Christian Science. I have been able to overcome self-pity and despondency, and in a great measure worry and fear.

I am indeed glad to live in this wonderful age and be permitted to help in some small way to bring the truth to others. Each day I realize more clearly what it meant for our dear Leader to stand alone and declare the truth to an unbelieving world, and what a great work she did for mankind. I am truly grateful to her for leaving us not only our wonderful textbook, but all the literature which is so helpful to us, and for our churches and societies and reading rooms. I am thankful for membership in The Mother Church and the privilege of working in several small societies at different times.—(Mrs.) Ines M. Perkins, Glendale, Ariz.
