Christian Science has been everything to me, having...
Christian Science has been everything to me, having come to me when I seemed to be without God in the world and had lost all faith and hope and joy. When first I heard of it I laughed at what I thought it to be. Some years later, when lying very ill in Brazil, absent treatment was recommended to me in a letter, but I simply scoffed at the idea, and so was taken back to England to undergo a severe operation. I had already undergone one in Brazil. After undergoing the operation in England and passing through another illness immediately after it, I was staying in the country to recuperate when I again fell victim to an old trouble for which I had been operated on some years previously. I had been told that if it ever returned another operation would be necessary, and I felt thoroughly wretched. Was I never to get out of the doctor's hands? We were already in debt from the great expenses we had been put to, and here loomed another, grim and merciless. I put off the evil day as long as possible, but at last decided to go up to London and arrange for it.
Just at that time two letters came from California, both telling me of Christian Science, and I decided to try it; so instead of going to a doctor I went to a practitioner, but was told by her that she could not possibly take any more work just then. She, however, told me to get "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy and read it daily, so I bought a copy. I then went to the south of France with a widowed aunt for a stay, where I had the mornings undisturbed to myself, and read all the time. My troubles began to fall away and a great joy came in their place, for at last I was finding God, good. For many years I had given up having any religion, having had all my beliefs argued away, and I had felt as though in a boat without a rudder. My joy in finding a religion which gave one a sure foundation that could not be swept away by argument and that satisfied, was unbounded.
From that time to this, about eleven years, I have only had the doctor once, and that was at the birth of my little daughter. Every discordant condition that has come up in these eleven years has been overcome with Christian Science, —fissures, measles, fevers, colds, hurts, headaches, bilious attacks, and bowel trouble. For all our many blessings I thank God, and my heart is full of gratitude to our dear Leader, who so lovingly sought and found the panacea for human misery. When we earnestly desire the truth we are most certainly led to it.
