I became actively interested in Christian Science in February, 1914. Several years before that a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was given to me by a dear sister, and I read it occasionally but could see nothing worth while in it. It was noticeable that after each reading I felt better, was happier and more contented, but I did not at the time attribute this change to Christian Science. In the beginning of the year 1914, however, I was very unhappy, so began the study of Christian Science in earnest. A little light began to penetrate the darkness, and I purchased a pocket edition of Science and Health, which I read every spare moment. In about a month the tobacco habit was permanently overcome. I had tried repeatedly to break this habit through will power but had failed. Stomach trouble has also been overcome, and I can now eat anything I wish without bad after effects. In the fall of 1917 my hair began to fall out very badly. I had treatment from a practitioner, and after several months the healing was manifest.
In April, 1918, I was drafted into the Army, and a short time afterwards was sent to France. Once in particular I was wonderfully protected, and time and again it was proved to me that "all things work together for good to them that love God." I am grateful for the sense of protection and safety that was with me through it all. I was free from the ailments common among the soldiers; indeed my health was perfect.
I am thankful to God and grateful to Mrs. Eddy for this truth that makes free, for the help of loving friends at home, and for the Publishing Society, whose literature reached me through the Christian Science War Relief committee. The Bible, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the Quarterly were my constant companions, together with the Hymnal; and the hope, comfort, and courage they brought and are still bringing are immeasurable. I can show my gratitude only by daily striving for more of that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus."
