Among the Churches

Current Notes

Colorado .—The general attitude of the secular press continues in all respects fair to Christian Science, and in addition some marked instances have been noted, showing that some members of the press are awakening to the insidious, but increasingly active, medical propaganda which is being pushed through every available channel. This awakening on the part of editors is due largely, without doubt, to the fact that many of them read The Christian Science Monitor. Reprints from our Monitor and Sentinel are continually being noted, and in nearly every instance due credit is given. Of the letters of correction written by this committee on publication, four sent to sectarian papers and one to a medical journal were not printed, but all addressed to the secular press were accepted and published.

Inasmuch as Christian Scientists are the only ones who are really awake to medical aggressions it behooves us to stay awake and watchful. Efforts are being made to enforce medical inspection in the public schools in spite of the fact that the Colorado law specifies that the children shall be examined by the teachers without physical contact. When this examination by the teacher reveals a defect the parent or guardian may, rather than have a medical examination of the child as called for in such an instance, have a Christian Science practitioner sign the notification card stating that the child is having Christian Science treatment, and such statement will be accepted. When the school authorities endeavor to enforce medical inspection it has been found advantageous to call their attention to the law as above mentioned.—
