[Written for the Sentinel]

Confidence

Above the storms of passion
And murmurs of self-will,
The voice of Truth still whispers
The message, Peace, be still;
And through the night of sorrow
Upon life's restless sea,
Love calms the waves of error,
In silent victory.

E'en in the drowning shadows
Truth's power still is nigh
To banish every darkness
And lift us up on high,
Until we reach in safety
The haven of our peace,
Where all earth's troubled anguish
Shall find a sure surcease.

The vision of the Christ is hid,
Through clouds of doubt and fear,
But understanding faith can grasp
That Love is always near.
