Many students of Christian Science have testified that their first insight into the truth was received in entirely unexpected surroundings. In my own case, I was traveling on a New York train when a young woman, a stranger to me, observing my anxiety while going over a dangerous curve where an accident had recently occurred, casually remarked, "You should realize that God is ever present;" and then, at my request, she followed her observation with a statement of her faith in Christian Science. While I failed to grasp the full significance of her belief, yet her evident sincerity and enthusiasm prompted me to commence reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and to attend the services and lectures. Before completing my first reading of the textbook an incident occurred which greatly strengthened my faith and encouraged me to continue its study.

I had suffered from violent headaches, the sort that completely distract and for which materia medica does not afford even temporary relief. They would continue from six to ten hours. While in the throes of one of these I tried to apply what had been gleaned from the textbook, merely a few precepts I was able to understand. The headache instantly left me. At the same time there came over me a serenity of mind never before experienced. This occurred in the presence of my husband, who was nonplussed by the suddenness of the demonstration. Other healings followed in quick succession, and I soon became thoroughly imbued with the teachings of Christian Science. Then came what may perhaps be termed a real test.

During the early part of July, 1916, a fever manifested itself and became very persistent. There soon followed a great sense of weakness and general debility. A practitioner was called; also a Christian Science nurse. The fever was continuous, and as a result of its intensity I became completely deaf. In a little over a week my weight was greatly reduced and hemorrhages had developed. Owing to the insistent demands of members of the family a physician was called. After an examination, to which I reluctantly submitted, since I was unalterably opposed to medical treatment, my case was diagnosed as severe typhoid, and the physician confided to my family that unless medical science was immediately resorted to, I would not live through the following day. As I look back to my weakened state I seem to remember being fully conscious, and to have been clearly guided, for I had no fear, and overwhelming confidence in being healed by Christian Science. I flatly refused to receive medical assistance, and when my family remonstrated I replied simply that I had faith in Mrs. Eddy's teachings and was placing my reliance altogether upon God. The ailment was beautifully overcome, and some weeks later I left for the Adirondacks. Upon my arrival there was a sense of weakness in both feet, and I found myself unable to walk. As no practitioner was available in that vicinity, the practitioner in New York was notified and in and incredibly short time this condition too was overcome.
