Signs of the Times

There are various opinions and numerous surmises as to the underlying cause of all the ferment, unrest, and discontent which are everywhere manifesting themselves at the present time, and which have never been entirely absent from human society so far as we have any records concerning it. In one of the most comprehensive statements the great Teacher made of the reason for his mission, he said: "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

By this he could not have meant that he would increase mere physical vitality, which is life in the human sense of the word, but that his teachings, entering into the hearts and minds and conduct of men, would so broaden and sweeten existence that living would be richer and more abounding. He came to bring "life and immortality to light." The Advent was a birthday of a new era for humanity shining at the point of its lowest descent in the darkest night of time, and letting the eternal daylight, spiritual and not physical, into the minds of men.
