It would hardly be possible to find a more erroneous version...

Brighton (Sussex, England) Herald

It would hardly be possible to find a more erroneous version of Christian Science than that given by a critic in a recent attack upon the subject, because Christian Science healing is based solely on the teachings of Jesus, who "beheld in Science the Perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick," as we read on page 476 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Now because Christian Science reminds us that God, Spirit, made man in His image and likeness, Christian Scientists do not believe that God is material. On the contrary, they are persistently seeking for the man of God's creation, namely, the reflection of Himself, Spirit; and in proportion to the faithfulness of their seeking this reflection, are they witnessing the healing works which Jesus promised should be performed by all those who believe.

Our critic derides Mrs. Eddy's explanation of the way Jesus healed, but gives no proof that he healed in any other way than by the power of divine Mind. That this way is again being utilized as it was for three hundred years after the crucifixion by all those who believed—namely, all those who were letting that Mind be in them "which was also in Christ Jesus"—is being proved beyond all doubt again today; for Christian Science is known by its works, works which are proving that a knowledge of Christ, Truth, does make free, give sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf—in a word, heals all manner of disease.

The critic further states that Christian Scientists do not believe in the atonement. To correct this misstatement I can but quote the fourth tenet of the Christian Science church, from page 497 of Science and Health, which reads: "We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death."
