Realizing the truth of the familiar words from one of our...
Realizing the truth of the familiar words from one of our hymns, "Ceasing to give, we cease to have," I gratefully offer my testimony of physical healing gained through the study of the Bible as illumined by Science and Health. For years I suffered from a catarrhal condition of the stomach which gradually grew worse until I was in an alarmingly weakened and emaciated state. All systems of treatment failed to effect a cure, and although upon a strict diet, I could not eat the lightest meal without suffering. Physicians could do no more for me, and few of my friends had any expectation of my recovery. I also suffered intensely with my eyes, for several years having been unable to read without severe headaches. Prominent oculists had been consulted, glasses worn, and a number of operations submitted to without relief.
At this time a friend who had been interested in Christian Science only a short time, but who had experienced its healing power, asked permission to read to me from Science and Health. From the first day I drank in the wonderful truths eagerly, and during the reading on the third day this verse of Scripture caught my attention: "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." From that moment all doubts as to the truth of this religion vanished forever.
During the short walk home from my friend's house, I decided to get out my Bible and make a trial at least of attempting to read for myself some of the passages that had just been read to me. Simultaneously with the thought of reading began the old headache, and I stopped short, realizing that a thought alone had caused all those years of suffering. My healing was instantaneous. Overjoyed at this proof, and satisfied that fear had been holding me in bondage, I began to hope for deliverance from the other distressing condition. I did not then possess a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but I clung faithfully to the ninety-first psalm, and through the realization of God's allness and love as expressed in those verses, in a week I was completely healed. So rapid was my gain in strength and weight, that a friend who had known me from childhood passed me on the street a month later without recognition.
