Christian Science came into my life after all material...
Christian Science came into my life after all material supports had failed. My illness was the culmination of wrong living and thinking from early boyhood. When a child I was constantly harassed by haunting fears. I was afraid of everything, even afraid to go to sleep, and night after night I would sit up for fear that I would pass on while asleep. Naturally this state of mind led to the taking of much medicine, and as the years passed I found temporary relief in drinking, until finally I became addicted to this habit and also to the excessive use of tobacco.
At the age of thirty-one I was a complete wreck. I had sought out many physicians but had found no relief. The specialist last consulted told me that I must devote my entire time for at least a year and a half to following the instructions in his treatment, but after several months of faithful compliance with his instructions I found myself gradually getting worse. At this time Christian Science was recommended to me, and after consultation with my wife, and with the feeling that it could do no harm anyway, a practitioner was called to my bedside to give me treatment. I slept very well that night for the first time in many years. This at the time seemed remarkable, for I had been in the habit of taking medicine at frequent intervals during the night. In the morning I realized to a degree the meaning of Jesus' command, "Ye must be born again," for in my heart there was a bright ray of hope, and the light of a new dawn illumined my consciousness. From that hour until now, years later, I have constantly improved mentally, morally, physically, financially, and spiritually. There has never been a desire to drink or smoke, and I can truly say I have experienced the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 407 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," that "Christian Science is the sovereign panacea."
My case was diagnosed by numerous physicians and with differing opinions, so that I would not profess to name from a medical point of view my divers troubles, but I am convinced that I would not have recovered under any material method of treatment. The full measure of peace and happiness that has come into my life through the understanding of Christian Science, in addition to all the other benefits, is surely just cause for a feeling of much gratitude that I have been permitted to experience its beneficent influence.
