Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram
Instead of using their building fund to enlarge and beautify the church, the members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, have instructed their treasurer to purchase Liberty Bonds with the three thousands dollar building fund. The improvements will be delayed.
This is decidedly what we call real Americanism. How much more religions an act was that than to have put the money into improvements of the church building! How admirably does it follow the injunction: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." The immediate duty of Americans, of whatever denomination, is to support the righteous war into which their country has been drawn. Every free institution, which this country guarantees to its citizens, including the precious heritage of religious freedom, is involved in this war. And the success of the war is dependent upon the successful financing of the war expense by the people of the nation. Which then is more religious? To beautify and enlarge the house of worship or to render practical and effective service to God's righteousness? "Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?" Are not righteous service and religion itself more than the edifice dedicated to them?
