Perhaps others may be benefited by the following account of an experience which convinced me that as we give power to evil through fear or hate, thus making it real to our own consciousness, we reap in disturbed physical conditions the results of the evil thoughts sown by mortal mind.
One Saturday about four years ago, while waiting for a car one morning, I entered a near-by store, where I found several acquaintances. I was asked to give an opinion about an article which was being read aloud, relating to a certain person, and venturing to say a few words I soon had a warm argument in hand. I expressed condemnation of the one under discussion, besides entertaining resentful feelings toward the man who had inveigled me into the argument, and while in this disturbed mental state noticed my car coming and hastened toward it. When about to board it I wrenched my ankle. The pain was intense, and caused me to complain bitterly against the street car company's defective switch tracks; however, I limped slowly and painfully into the car and rode to the loop. I then tried to reach a Christian Science practitioner near by, and after waiting for some time without finding the one I wished, I returned to my boarding place and read the Bible and Science and Health. The pain was overcome to some extent, but the ankle remained quite swollen and discolored.
As the weather was cold I did not go out for two days. Then I borrowed a cane, and although unable to lace my shoe on account of the swollen and painful condition of the foot, I boarded the street car and went straight to see a Christian Scientist. I related my experience, and he gave me a treatment. As a result I was then and there freed from pain, and after thanking the Scientist for his help I arranged my shoe laces and hurriedly left the office, even forgetting the borrowed cane. A week or ten days after the above treatment I met this friend on the street, and told him that the foot was healed when I left his office, but that it was still discolored. He replied, "If you will quit thinking black thoughts, your foot will quickly become white." I followed his advice, and on retiring that night, to my great delight I found that the discoloration had disappeared.
