In 1903 I heard of a physical healing through the ministration...

In 1903 I heard of a physical healing through the ministration of Christian Science. At that time I was not yet twenty-one, was in good health, and not interested in religious study. During the four years that followed I made a desultory study of Mrs. Eddy's writings and attended the services at Christian Science churches with some regularity at first. A number of practically instantaneous healings occurred during this time; among them were relief from hemorrhoids which I had experienced periodically since early childhood, and the overcoming of influenza, "pink eye," and some minor ailments. There had been no apparent spiritual awakening, however, and it was not until the spring of 1908 that I found myself face to face with a problem which promised to be stubborn.

Never before had I known what it was to have to seek employment, and although I was skilled and accustomed to good wages, there seemed for the first time no demand for the service I could give, and no place to seek an opportunity. At last I had to turn to God, Principle, to find not only employment but myself; to affirm and demonstrate that "in Science man is the offspring of Spirit," and that because of his origin he does not have to "pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence" (Science and Health, p. 63). Through a number of circumstances unnecessary to relate, but proving conclusively that the result came not from man but from God, employment was found. What is of far greater importance to me, there also came an earnest desire to study the writings of Mrs. Eddy in connection with the Bible, and to subscribe for and read the authorized periodicals. An interesting feature of this experience was that others involved with me, although not interested in Christian Science, were benefited by the work done, and these benefits have been as permanent as in my own case.

Since that time there have been numerous opportunities to prove the efficacy of Christian Science in all manner of circumstances. A badly bruised ankle and an injured eye were quickly healed. Health and strength have been retained, although at times many of the alleged laws of matter have necessarily been violated. The temptation to rely upon material means for relief of any physical indisposition disappeared after my first experience, and the understanding that God is omnipresent and omnipotent has been sufficient in every instance.
