Readers in Branch Churches

The Christian Science Board of Directors

A question having arisen in some branch churches in regard to the eligibility for reelection to the office of reader of persons who have served for three years in that office, and this question having been referred to The Christian Science Board of Directors for decision, they make the following statement, to wit:—

There is no by-law of The Mother Church which regulates the tenure of office or the eligibility for reelection of readers in the branch churches, but as our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, in the articles "Words for the Wise" and "Afterglow" (Miscellany, p. 250), has spoken definitely on this subject, there should be no difficulty in deciding what is the best course to be pursued in such matters. It seems clear to us that the intent of these articles was to recommend that no person should fill the office of reader longer than three years. It also seems clear to us that the election as either first or second reader (even after an interval) of one who has served as reader for a total period of three years or more, would not be in keeping with the spirit of this recommendation.
