I feel ready to give to the world the testimony of my healing through Christian Science. During the year 1914 my health was very poor, and it became worse every day. After consulting one of our best physicians, and also a specialist, who could not diagnose the case, the only thing left for me was to submit to an operation, in order that the doctors might explore. I was operated on, but received little relief; indeed, I was on the operating table several times. On three occasions I was taken to the hospital, to remain there for several weeks, and many times it seemed as if my life was fast slipping away. When brought home I suffered more than I care to relate. The doctor was very capable and was doing all he could. My faith in him was great, but when I called for him to come and do something for me, as my suffering was terrible, he came only to tell me that the disease was organic, in an advanced stage, and considered incurable by all physicians.
That night I was worse, and a friend who had talked to me of Christian Science asked if she might call a practitioner. I gave my consent and the practitioner came. For the first time in eight months I slept through the night, and to my surprise the next morning I raised myself on my elbow without pain; I sat up, and then stood up, and the words seemed to come to me, "You are healed." Never before had I experienced such happiness. My husband had been carrying me upstairs, but then I walked, "leaning on the sustaining infinite" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii). From that moment I knew God was the only physician, and the Christ, Truth, made me physically and spiritually whole. During the following year I had many hard places to go over, owing to my run-down condition, but I gained rapidly, and my healing was a beautiful demonstration of the power of Truth, for to mortal sense I was at death's door.
Words can never express my gratitude for the understanding that I can turn to God at all times and under all circumstances. I also wish to express the tender love I have for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for giving to the world "the Comforter," through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in which thousands of weary wanderers have found the living Christ.
