Our critic stated that "our Lord expected other people would be able to do what he did." That is just what all true students of Christian Science are earnestly trying to learn to do, and it would seem rather doubtful criticism to upbraid the followers of the great Physician and Wayshower for not adopting medical remedies when their Teacher never administered any remedy but the power of ever present Truth and Love. Christian Science does not teach that all medical practice is "perfectly useless," but recognizes that in ordinary experience humanity owes a deep debt of gratitude to this practice for the loving ministrations and physical comforts given through its means.

Physical relief is, however, the sole object of medical treatment; and as our critic states that "many of the doctors who were doing this were men who were not religious themselves, and did not profess to treat people religiously at all," the healing was not in accord with that of Jesus, who on several occasions told his patients to "sin no more," showing that the real sense of healing must be the result of a purification of thought, and not merely the removal of a physical manifestation. Christian Science, therefore, recognizes medical treatment from a purely material standpoint, while seeing the absolute impossibility of trying to mix it with metaphysical or real spiritual healing, which is Christian Science. On page 89 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy says: "When patients are under material medical treatment, it is advisable in most cases that Scientists do not treat them, or interfere with materia medica."

If we accept the critic's statement that the "doctors had lately been pointing out that the emotions of the mind do affect the body," and we define emotion as "feeling of joy, grief, fear, hate, love, and so on," then logically we can come into possession of real harmony only as we exchange our sense of mind for that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," which in turn determines our real feelings, or consciousness of existence.
