In 1907 Christian Science was offered to a loved one who was about to undergo an operation, but it was not accepted. While waiting for the outcome of this ordeal I partly read the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which had so lovingly been placed in the home. My experience has helped me never to condemn any one who reads this wonderful book and fails to grasp its message, for while I had no criticism to make, it was a closed book to me. It seemed to require the sorrow and grief of losing this loved one, together with repeated financial losses, lack of supply, and physical ailments, to prepare the soil into which the seed of truth was to be dropped.
About six months after this experience, when courage, hope, strength, as well as material methods and remedies, were all failing me, when I would go about my housework a while and then be obliged to lie down a while, I found myself wishing for this book. I even made a special trip to my mother's home to see if it were still there, only to find it had been returned. Afterward I could see how divine Love answers our every right desire, for not many hours after this a neighbor brought me her copy of Science and Health, saying she heard I was not well and thought I might like to read it.
This time every word was a living message, and with tears of joy and humiliation I realized the ever-presence of the Christ. I wondered, was invigorated, thrilled. The Bible, which I had not used for years, was brought out and searched. I had found nothing so interesting as this teaching in all my life, and knew it was that for which I had always been longing. All sense of fatigue, discouragement, weariness, and weakness was a thing of the past.
