The Lectures

Halifax, England (First Church).—John Sidney Braithwaite, lecturer; introduced by Walter Wilding, who said in part:—

It was my privilege more than sixteen years ago to come into touch with Christian Science, and my experience to see some of the works of Christian Scientists in my then medical practice. Through the prayers of Christian Scientists several cases in my practice were healed. These were serious cases of organic disease, and I knew they were medically incurable. Yet under the ministration of prayer as understood in Christian Science they were healed.

It was these proofs by works which compelled me to study Christian Science, and I saw that it is the truth, that it is the Science of absolute Truth, the exact knowledge of God and real being, and that it was that exact understanding of God and His law which Jesus had and which enabled him to do the works he did and of which he said, "He that believeth on me," i.e., he that has this exact knowledge of God and real being that I have, "the works that I do shall he do also." The more I studied Christian Science the clearer I saw the great gulf fixed between medicine and Christian Science. The former is based wholly on the belief in the substantiality of matter and the reality of evil and disease, whereas Christian Science is founded wholly on the substantiality of Spirit and the reality of good—the consequent utter unreality, the nothingness, of matter and evil. From this position of thought it was not a far step to retire from medical practice. Having done this, it is now my endeavor to try to fit myself for this Christ-method of healing—Christian Science.
