[Written for the Sentinel]

Mary Baker Eddy

Who was this woman of the granite hills,
Breaking the iron spell of gloom and tears,
Dwelling in joyous harmony that fills
All earth with blossom through the eternal years?
Who was this woman strong to conquer fears,
Walking alone in silence, healing ills,
In sweet communion with the Mind that steers
The spinning worlds and waves unquiet stills?

In old time Jesus came to lead the way,
And now this woman is the new world's dower,
Teaching that God is Love,—not wrath to slay,—
That good is all and only good is power.
The lamp she kindled sends its beams afar,
And shines as did that ancient winter star.
