It is with a heart full of gratitude that I tell how tenderly...
It is with a heart full of gratitude that I tell how tenderly divine Love sustained me and led me to take up the study of Christian Science. I found out through bitter experiences that mere repetition of the words of Christian Science does not heal; but that the Principle for which those words stand can and does heal; and when I made an honest effort to understand that Principle my healing came.
A few years ago I was stricken with an ailment which finally developed into an asthmatic condition. We were camping at the time, and I had to be brought home and put to bed, where I remained for several weeks under the care of our family physician. All of that winter I was ill, with only enough strength to get about the house. I knew nothing of Christian Science, but becoming discouraged with material remedies thought I would try it. I was benefited enough to get out of doors during the summer, but as fall drew nigh it found me in a worse condition than the previous year. I then returned to material remedies and another physician, but he could do nothing for me, and it was not many weeks before I again turned to Truth. A few words spoken by our Master seemed to be my only hope, and often when I was about to give up the battle they stood before me as letters of fire.
One day a lady who called to see me asked permission to send some one to talk to me about Christian Science. I gave my consent, and in a few days the Scientist came. She found me in a dreadful condition, filled with fear, and a total wreck. (I had not left my room for over three months.) She began to read to me from Science and Health, but I told her I did not think it of much use, for I knew that book was full of beautiful words, just like the Bible, but they did not help me. She then said, "Do you know that those words all have a spiritual meaning and must be spiritually understood?" I said no more, but just listened, and when she left I was thoroughly convinced that Christian Science was the Christ-healing, but that it must be understood and demonstrated.
