Education

Among other subjects upon which Christian Science throws new light is that of education. Although this question looms largest perhaps to those directly interested in school work, or to those who feel that their growth in Science is impeded because of neglected education, yet it is a subject which in some degree affects all. In no phase of human activity is a realization of the truth more imperative, for in no other sphere is the human mind so regally enthroned.

Our schools and colleges, founded for the development of mind in matter, or brains, are apostles of the doctrine of many minds. Also a very prevalent theory, even to the present day, is that education is largely a matter of memory; that a child's mind is empty, and must be packed with facts just as one would fill a basket with eggs. Another theory, evolved to offset the shortcomings of the first, is that human will-power must be used to force in the items which the child does not willingly accept. Fortunately a better view now begins to creep timidly forward; namely, that education means an awakening to mental activity. But as Christian Scientists we can go a step farther, and know that education is the increasing influx of intelligence—that reflection of infinite Mind which follows obedience to the command, "Be still, and know that I am God."

Now the Bible tells us where to turn for real education when Paul declares in his second epistle to Timothy that all inspired Scripture is given of God, and "is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." In addition it reveals the true teacher as saying, "They shall be all taught of God," and states in the words of the wise man, "The Lord giveth wisdom." Moreover, it sets forth some concrete examples of the fruits of such education. In Isaiah we find, "The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary." Also, in the case of the Hebrew boys, we read in the first chapter of Daniel, "God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom:and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. ... And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm."
