The truth of the statement that "man's extremity is God's...
The truth of the statement that "man's extremity is God's opportunity" was exemplified in my case. For six years I had been ill as the result of a general breakdown. I was anemic, and suffered from stomach, liver, and heart trouble. I had been unable to lie on my left side for three years, and was confined to the bed for three months. The physician worked over me faithfully, and I improved sufficiently to move around slowly, but remained very feeble for three months. Another doctor treated me for a few weeks, and then said no medicine could help me, as my blood was poisoned, but that the ocean air might prove beneficial.
My husband advised me to spend the winter with our son in New York City, but thought it best for me to visit his people in Virginia first. In passing through Washington I stopped off to see a friend who was a Christian Science practitioner. When asked to explain Christian Science to me, she gladly did so, and though some of the statements I was reluctant to accept, nevertheless I asked for treatment.
I had not had a full night's sleep for six years, but that night I was asleep ten minutes after retiring, and did not awaken until six o'clock in the morning. More than that, I had been lying on my left side without experiencing any inconvenience whatever, and felt like a new person. The following day I went on to New York, where I secured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and soon found that it answered many questions which had puzzled me. The study turned my attention to my thought, and I found much work to be done in overcoming malice, hatred, criticism, and the like.
