Immanuel
Immanuel, or "God with us,"—what spiritual wealth is here disclosed! Before Christian Science and its infinite possibilities opened out, how little this name could have meant to us! One had become accustomed to reading these words periodically, or hearing them read in church, without attaching much meaning to them or drawing help therefrom; but with the Christian Science text-book as a "Key to the Scriptures," what depths of meaning are revealed!
The synonyms for God given by our Leader in Science and Health (p. 465) are as follows: "infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Now if we substitute any one of these for the name God, let us see what possibilities of helpful thought are opened up. If the statement were to read "infinite Mind with us," then whatever perplexing problem may seemingly be troubling us,—and possibly there may be no human friend at hand to help with advice,—we can know that infinite Mind is with us, that is, that we have the aid of infinite intelligence—and what mortal problem can be too great for infinite intelligence? On page 103 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy refers to Jesus' "spiritual individuality that reflected the Immanuel, or 'God with us.' " She continues: "This God was not outlined. He was too mighty for that. He was eternal Life, infinite Truth and Love. The individuality is embraced in Mind, therefore is forever with the Father. Hence the Scripture, 'I am a God at hand, saith the Lord.' "
Now let us consider another synonym, namely, Spirit, and declare Spirit to be with us. Let this truth be realized when we are confronted by the belief of life in matter, with all its earthly woes an evanescent pleasures weighing us down with their apparent reality. The sooner we turn to our new found knowledge of the real man's spirituality, the sooner can we lay hold on the comforting fact that Spirit, God, is never parted from His reflection, the real, spiritual man; and in proportion as this is realized does the anxiety or trouble, or whatever the seeming inharmony may be, assume less and less the appearance of reality.
