A sermon against Christian Science, as reported, bases...
Coatesville (Pa.) Record
A sermon against Christian Science, as reported, bases the existence of Christian Science on the want of sanity and competent knowledge of the Scriptures on the part of its adherents. This is far from the truth and most unfortunate for the critic, for it convicts him of ignorance regarding the subject on the one hand, or of misrepresentation on the other.
In proof of this statement it can be said that a priest of an Episcopal church, about three years ago, publicly announced his conviction that "Protestantism must substantially adopt the faith and practice of Christian Science if its churches are to fulfil their mission to the world," and this conviction, he states, "is the result of several years' critical and philosophical investigation of the doctrines and practice of Christian Science." This clergyman gave evidence not only of being perfectly sane, but also of having an intelligence of an unusually high order. After such investigation from an unprejudiced standpoint he said, speaking of critics of Christian Science, "The denunciations by many ministers reveal a lack of thought and of kindness which raises a suspicion that the fear of losing members rather than love of truth may account for their hostility."
If our critic will study his Bible with the aid of the spiritual light which the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, throws upon it, sufficiently to enable him to heal the sick and practise the golden rule, he will never mention Christian Science except in terms of gratitude, because he will understand what Jesus meant when he said, "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The knowledge of this truth makes man free from the desire to criticize. Until our critic has reached the point where he can heal the sick by an understanding of the truth contained in the Bible, he should never attack those who are doing so, and have done so for years, to the lasting relief and gratitude of many thousands of people.
