The Record
It may be observed that the remarks of our critic have a familiar ring,—very familiar indeed. In fact, as a whole, the gentleman's attack is a complete replica of similar attacks which have been made on Christian Science and its Founder, Mrs. Eddy, throughout the last half century, the while Christian Science has proceeded steadily on its way, diffusing its messages of love and healing thousands upon thousands of people throughout the world.
No religious movement has ever been the object of misrepresentation and vilification to the extent that Christian Science has, and no other religious movement has ever experienced the marvelous growth that has attended Christian Science. Reference is made to this latter fact merely as an indication of the "awe". in which Christian Scientists stand of these periodical attacks. The misrepresentation of our critic might temporarily deceive those who have never looked into Christian Science or who have never experienced its beneficial ministrations, but to those who have felt its loving and healing touch, and who have taken the time honestly to investigate its teachings, such an example of religious intolerance amounts to little.
The critic has taken much time in an endeavor to minimize the healing of disease through the application of Christian Science. Aside from the question as to whether or not Christian Science heals, a study of the Bible, especially of the New Testament, will reveal unmistakably the duty of every one of us in this particular. It is very clear that Jesus healed the sick metaphysically, and it is just as clear that these examples of healing given to the world by Jesus were for the guidance of all mankind, and that it is not only the privilege but the duty of us all so to acquaint ourselves with God and God's laws as to be able to follow the Master in the way of his directing and to "heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." Therefore it is observed that, regardless of whether or not Christian Science is healing the sick, our reverend critic has sadly missed the lesson of Jesus' life-work if he is not endeavoring to heal the sick and the sinful as Jesus directed we should do.
