Nearly eight years ago I heard of Christian Science, but being a trained nurse could not believe it was possible to cure diseases without material means. A short time after this I went to live with a friend who had been healed through Christian Science after the doctor had given her but a few months to live. Soon afterward I became very ill, and the physician who examined my throat said it was in a very bad condition; that if it were not better the next day he would have to inject antitoxin. He then wrote out a prescription, but on the way home I became frightened and discoraged and tore it up.
I told my friend what the doctor had said, and she asked me if I had done anything. When I replied that I did not know what to do, she told me I must take my stand either for medicine or for Christian Science. I had no faith in the former and no knowledge of the latter, but decided in favor of Christian Science. My friend helped me to bed, then read to me from Science and Health, and although not understanding a word, I fell asleep. In the morning a Christian Science practitioner came and gave me a treatment. That evening the doctor called, but I was so much better he did not even ask to look at my throat. In four treatments I was healed, and four days after that went on a case.
I did not, however, give Christian Science the credit for my healing until two weeks later, when I began to compare this experience with previous ones, when I had been ill from three to four weeks. Then I began to realize there must be something in Christian Science, so I procured a copy of Science and Health and began to read it. Through the reading of the text-book a bowel trouble from which I had suffered all my life was overcome, arch supports that had been worn for over six years were laid off, headaches disappeared, also muscular rheumatism of six years' standing.
