Christian Science was brought to me in the darkest hour...
Christian Science was brought to me in the darkest hour of a mother's life,—when I was almost overcome with grief at the passing on of my baby. Turning away from God, or what I had been taught to believe was God, I refused to be comforted. Then a lady, who proved to be a Christian Scientist, told me of a God who is loving and kind, who does not cause death, but who sent His Son into the world to show us the way to overcome sickness, sin, and even the "last enemy," and her loving assurance gave me new courage and strength to bear my burdens. This lady moved away from the small town in which I lived, and nearly fifteen years passed before I had an opportunity to learn more of the teachings of Christian Science, which at the time it was first presented to me was almost unknown to the majority of people.
For years I had suffered from gall-stones, bronchial asthma, heart trouble, and many other ailments caused by these conditions. I finally decided to undergo an operation, as my family physician said the gall-stones would terminate in either blood-poisoning or a malignant growth, but was told that I could not take an anesthetic. The physician advised me to go into the northern pines until my breathing was better, but to do this would necessitate closing my home and putting my two children out to board. Then, in the stillness of the night, when all in the house except myself were asleep, the thought of Christian Science came to me; but while I wanted to try it, there was also the fear that I had waited too long. With the morning came a full determination to give it a trial. I told my husband of my plans, to which he heartily agreed, for he was tired of seeing me suffer and was glad to try anything before having the operation. I called on a practitioner, and was healed with one treatment. Fearing a possible return of the trouble, I insisted on being treated twice after that, but found I was permanently healed. That was fourteen years ago.
Through the faithful study of Science and Health I have been healed of sick headaches and goiter; and every other ailment that has come to me or to my family has been overcome. Truth has been our only physician, and has never failed us. I have mastered many faults which would never have been overcome had not pain and sorrow driven my tired feet into the way that leads to God. In every experience He has given me wisdom and strength to withstand the trial. I have learned to love more, to be a better mother, wife, and friend.
