Benton County Courier
Our critic assails vigorously his "man of straw," but in reality fails to touch even the hem of the garment of Christian Science. Such attempts are bound to result, in this case as in hundreds of similar cases, in many thoughtful readers turning to the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to find therein the truth about Christian Science and, perchance, deliverance from the bondage of sin and disease.
Christian Science, being scientific Christianity, is demonstrable. Christian Scientists are striving earnestly, and with a gratifying measure of success, to demonstrate its divine Principle in healing the sick and reforming the sinner. Now, I am sure that your readers will readily recognize that one who has demonstrated Christian Science, even in a small degree, is better qualified to state the truth about it than one who has given only superficial consideration to the subject, and that with a view to attacking it. Clergymen of other denominations do not advise people to seek, or expect them to get, a fair statement of the teachings of Christianity from its enemies; neither can those who are seeking correct information on the subject of Christian Science expect it from those whose thought is manifestly characterized by blind prejudice or by hatred of Christian Science, its Founder, and her students.
It is quite true that when the subject of Christian Science is under consideration we quote as authority the words of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and author of its text-book, and expect fair-minded people to take her "seriously." I might add that we do not expect such people to take the statements of misinformed critics of Christian Science seriously.
