In the column devoted to science and invention in a recent issue Christian Scientists are referred to in a way that is apt to create a wrong impression. The passage in question is as follows: "Pain and Self-control. Undoubtedly some Christian Scientists under the spell of religious zeal are able to efface their sensations." As there is no "spell of religious zeal" in Christian Science, it is quite a mistake to suppose that Christian Scientists efface sensation or do away with pain while under the influence of any such spell. In the practice of Christian Science healing no use whatever is made of hypnotic power, or human will influence, or suggestion in any form.
It is the spiritual understanding of what the one and only true God really is, as taught in Christian Science, that frees individuals from pain and heals sickness and sin. The divine control of the one Mind, God, who is Life, Truth, and Love, produces the harmonious and beneficial effects that are being seen today in the spiritual healing activities of Christian Science. Normal and natural conditions, both physical and mental, are manifested in every individual who gains some knowledge of these teachings of divine Truth, which are set forth by Mrs. Eddy in the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." In this book she writes as follows (p. 203): "If God were understood instead of being merely believed, this understanding would establish health." Many people in this country have gratefully borne testimony to the fact that not only discordant sensations of all sorts but the most severe forms of painful illness have been completely healed by Christian Science after all material remedies had failed.
