In 1909 a story of healing in Christian Science was related...

In 1909 a story of healing in Christian Science was related to me by a friend who had been wonderfully blessed, and the manner in which the incident was recounted so impressed me that I could not but think that the robe of righteousness was enveloping her thought. It seemed so pure and helpful that I decided to know more of the fountain whence came all this joy and happiness. The following day I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read it with much interest for some weeks, accepting many of the leading thoughts as true, yet not fully grasping the underlying Principle.

In a few months I again realized the urgent need of something more efficacious than medicine, which had repeatedly failed to give me more than temporary relief, so the study of Science and Health was taken up in earnest. After some months of faithful study I asked a practitioner of assist me in working out my problem, and in three weeks I noted a wonderful improvement in my physical condition. A serious trouble diagnosed as catarrh of the stomach was soon completely healed; nervousness and sleeplessness were overcome, and my hearing, which had been greatly impaired, was much improved. The tobacco habit of thirty-five years' standing left me, and I have had no desire for the weed since.

While my brother and I were touring over a very rough strip of country in an automobile, the engine stopped and the car started to back down a steep hill, the brake failing to hold it. I steered the machine against a bank by the side of the road, and a stranger who came along at this time offered his help. I suggested that he steer the car while my brother and I pushed, but when the car was in the center of the road it again commenced backing down the hill. The thought came to me that I could stop it by taking hold of the spoke, and I did so, but my thumb was almost completely severed at the first joint. Realizing, however, that "accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind" (Science and Health, p. 424), and that there is no sensation in matter, I did not mention the occurrence until we had reached the top of the hill. The thumb was then bound up in a handkerchief, and I drove the car thirteen miles to the nearest surgeon, who removed the bones in the end of the thumb and sewed it on again. Four days later I drove the car home, a distance of a hundred and twenty miles. I dressed and cared for the thumb myself with perfect ease, there being no swelling and scarcely any pain. We built a cattle shed fourteen by thirty feet, and I did all the framing and sawing, as well as a good deal of the nailing, with this hand, and had the shed completed within four weeks from the time the above incident occurred.
