[Written for the Sentinel]

Giving

So live that when the call doth come
To help some one in need,
Thou'lt answer with a joyous heart,
With open hand and eager feet.
And more: that thou be ready with the gift
Of Spirit's healing touch whene'er 'tis sought,
And ask not who the seeker, what the thought,—
If on the heights or in the shadowed vale,
If in the glamour of the noon
Or in the dead of night, in some forsaken dale,—
Just give! The joy thou hast in giving
Is but the rightful heritage of righteous living;
Just give! 'Tis thou who art receiving
When with a humbled heart and loving life
Thou art found worthy of the grace of giving.
