Cannon City (Col.) Record
A paper purporting to be for Bible students, which was widely distributed in Canon City recently, referred to Christian Science as having been brought forward by Satan with a view to confusing the people and leading them away from the truth. It is indeed passing strange that Satan should be credited with bringing forth the very teaching that not only posits but proves the powerlessness, yea, the utter nothingness, of Satan and all evil, including sickness and sorrow, fear and lack, as well as sin. That Christian Science does this is now an acknowledged or indisputable fact, even where its method of accomplishment is not understood.
Inasmuch as the carnal mind is ever the same, it is interesting to note that when the Pharisees could no longer deny the healings wrought by Christ Jesus, they attempted to discredit him by saying that he cast out devils by the prince of devils, which is just another way of saying that Satan had sent forth Jesus to confuse the people. The Master refuted this lie with the self-evident truth, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; . . . and if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?"
The study of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, reveals its basis to be the immutability of God, good, and His perfect creation. From that premise it proves that all evil is simply the figment of the devil, declared by Christ Jesus to be a liar and the father of lies. Mrs. Eddy was eminently practical in all her teachings, which are not expressed in dry dogmas but in daily deeds. All through her writings we find such admonitions as the following from pages 283 and 201 of Science and Health: "We must receive the divine Principle in the understanding, and live it in daily life; and unless we so do, we can no more demonstrate Science, than we can teach and illustrate geometry by calling a curve a straight line or a straight line a sphere." "The best sermon ever preached is Truth practised and demonstrated by the destruction of sin, sickness, and death." Christian Scientists are daily finding that in proportion as they obey these admonitions, and conform their thinking and living to the law of God, the fruit of the Spirit is their present reward, and they know of a certainty that "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace."
