Two years ago I first learned what Christian Science really...
Two years ago I first learned what Christian Science really is, when I was instantaneously healed of two serious conditions while reading Science and Health. For fourteen years I had suffered from a hernia, which came soon after a very delicate operation, when two abnormal growths were removed. Refusing another operation, which promised only temporary relief, I had a surgical appliance made and wore it all the time. Two and a half years ago another growth came, which developed rapidly; then a double hernia appeared. As doctors had told me that there was no cure for these diseases in a material way, I made myself as comfortable as I could with a stronger support.
At this time a Christian Scientist came to live in the hotel where we were then staying, and I often asked him questions about Christian Science healing, for the subject was new to me. After two months, as I was growing worse, I asked this gentleman if I could be helped through Christian Science, and he said I could be healed as well as others. He advised me to get a copy of Science and Health and try to understand it as I read, adding that the chapter on Prayer would be very helpful. My prejudice against Mrs. Eddy and her teachings had been strong, although I did not really know anything about her or about Christian Science; therefore some time passed before my thoughts were changed enough for me to obtain her book. When I finally did so, I shut myself in my room at seven o'clock in the evening, and read and reread the chapter on Prayer. As I read I knew that a great change was taking place, but was so interested that I forgot the bodily conditions. My consciousness was filled with gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for being able to write those wonderful words, and all prejudice vanished. I had never heard of any one being healed by reading a book, and was greatly surprised, when my husband told me it was midnight, to find that I had been healed. For the first time in months I slept all night like a child, and in the morning I was like a new woman, the growth having dissolved and passed painlessly away.
My neighbor assured me that if I had no fear, and would leave off the truss, the other trouble would go. I thought this was impossible, because I had suffered from it so long that it seemed a part of me. However, that day I read every available minute, and all the evening until bedtime. Upon retiring I noticed that the hernia simply disappeared from sight, and in the morning the material support was laid away and has never been worn since. A few days later a fear of a return of these troubles became rather alarming to me, as did a sense of pain, so I asked for a few treatments. The third day proved to me that I was healed forever, as all fear went with the pain.
