Readiness

On page 458 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader writes: "Divinity is always ready. Semper paratus is Truth's motto." Thousands of human beings are proving this truism every day, and each one has the opportunity to gain many blessing because of the readiness of divinity to help us in the minutiæ of our human affairs.

A short time ago a young man came to a Christian Science practitioner and asked for help for both a physical and a financial need. The young man was bright, and had taken a partial course in secretarial work, which would afford him good remuneration; but he claimed that he could not find work of this kind, and to supply his present needs had accepted a position as a painter in the new subway. This occupation was not very congenial to him, inasmuch as it was underground and he was in darkness all day long. He did not complain, however, but trusted Truth to guide him into a better position.

The second day after Christian Science treatment had been taken up, he called the practitioner and told him that he was feeling much better physically, but that he had to report a change to a lower position and a reduction in pay, for he was no longer a painter, but a painter's helper. He expressed great surprise when the practitioner told him not to be discouraged at this seeming loss and referred him to the statement on page 3 of Science and Health: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more." So the young man, instead of being sorry for himself, went on with his work, rejoicing.
