[Written for the Sentinel]

A Wider View

No longer seek I for some peak in Darien
Whereon to stand and view a wide expanse,
For my heart knows an ocean deeply blue,
Far broader, deeper than the western sea
Balboa gazed upon, and seeing it
So still and calm,
Called it the Pacific.

So sunny and serene its waters lie,
Mirroring heaven's blue; while all night long
The everlasting stars look down to view
Their burnished loveliness in its clear depths.
I stand and gaze upon this wide domain,
So still and calm,
This wondrous sea of Truth.

Go, little ships that sail Truth's shining sea,
Freighted with heaven's cargo,—hope and love;
Sail safely to your harbor homes, nor fear
The shock of sudden storm or hidden reef.
Securely as you ride the waters deep,
Safe, still, and calm,
So do I journey on!
