Many years prior to taking up the study of Christian Science...
Many years prior to taking up the study of Christian Science I searched long and earnestly for light upon the Scriptures, and for an explanation of Jesus' sayings, which I thoroughly believed must be true. All the learned discourses on the Bible and endeavors to make the way plain, however, gave only occasional gleams of light with slight comfort, and so I turned from the ordinary method of preaching the gospel, to the Word alone, secretly believing that at some time and in some way the promises would be fulfilled and the ability to know God aright realized, as Jesus declared. Little did I think that the light was already shining in the darkness,—that the Comforter was already come through the teaching of a book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
Today I rejoice exceedingly in the light that has come through the clearer understanding of the Word as explained by our text-book; and for the many victories gained over mental, moral, and physical discords through the application of this spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures. I find a new heaven and a new earth opening up to me in the overcoming of tendencies which caused me to view life from a material standpoint, thus making it most miserable. Old things are beginning to pass away. Chronic stomach disorder, severe headaches, and throat trouble are as a dream that is past, while pride, resentment, and criticism are to a great degree vanishing from my experience.
My gratitude extends not only to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose labor for us all was so untiring, but to the faithful ones at headquarters who are continuing to guide and guard and to see that we receive the food which is good for us. I cannot be grateful enough for our periodicals, which so often come as angels of light to dispel the clouds that seem to gather, and so I join with the host who thank God for Christian Science.
