So much encouragement and so many benefits
So much encouragement and so many benefits have come to me from reading the testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals, that I wish to express my gratitude for them and to testity to the healing power of Truth. I was led to investigate Christian Science when in great need of relief from physical suffering. Through an injury, blood poisoning was manifested in a severe form in the left leg. After three months' treatment under the best doctors, the family physician, my husband's most intimate friend, told us we must choose between surgery and Christian Science, as material remedies could assist no further. Having had previous experience with surgery, I was reluctant to try it again, but went to the surgeon and arranged to go into the hospital the day after Christmas, 1913.
On my way home, however, I decided that I could not then allow the use of the knife on my leg, so immediately telephoned to my husband, asking him to engage a Christian Science practitioner. Although unable to get to and from the surgeon's office alone, I found strength to go about seven miles on street cars to the office of the practitioner, and the second day following I realized for the first time what Truth can and does do. It was Christmas day, and as I much desired to see my family, I telephoned the practitioner to that effect. As a result was onabled to go on four different street cars and spend several hours with my family, also to call on a sick friend who lived up three flights of stairs, and all this without pain or inconvenient fatigue.
My complete healing was slow, as my thought was filled with so-called material laws and its trend was very material. During the period of treatment I was most wonderfully healed of sciatica, from which I had suffered intensely. The pain left instantly, and there has been no return of it. Pleasure in the use of stimulants was overcome in the first treatment, and I have never taken an alcoholic stimulant since. As understanding has become clearer I have gained relief from weakness resulting from a major operation performed before I knew the power of Truth. Many other material benefits have come to me and mine, but we are most grateful for the mental freedom which a realization of the truth has brought into our lives.
